1914-01-01 Freddie Welsh nd-w pts 10 Johnny Dundee, Pelican Park, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - GB. Referee: Dick Burke. Although made at catchweights, with both Dundee (129½) and Welsh (134½) inside 135lbs the latter’s title claim at the weight was automatically at stake as would have been a crack at Willie Ritchie. Although Dundee made a good start he was gradually overhauled by Welsh, who began to display everything a world-class boxer should have except a winning punch, and his superiority in the fourth, eighth and tenth rounds made certain of the press decision.
A few days later, on 6 January at the Armory Auditorium, Atlanta, Georgia, Welsh, billed as a world championship claimant, outpointed Frank Whitney over ten rounds. Despite outweighing Whitney by several pounds, with the American coming in at 134lbs Welsh’s aspirations of unifying the championship could have imploded.
