1914-01-12 (158lbs) George Chip nd-w pts 10 Gus Christie, Elite Rink, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Both men were reckoned to be inside 158lbs at the 3pm weigh-in, with Chip’s title claim being the prize for Christie if he could find a finishing blow. There hardly seemed to be any likelihood of that happening as Chip blasted him all around the ring, but the latter for all his domination was unable to find a knockout drop, mauling Christie about for round after round. The last two sessions saw Christie giving it a go, especially with the straight left, but Chip was soon breaking through his guard without doing any damage before settling for the press verdict.
Next up for Chip were six-round no-decision contests against Tim O'Neil (nd-w rsc 2 at the Powers Theatre, Grand Rapids, Michigan on 19 January) and Joe Borrell (nd-w pts 6 at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 26 January). While O'Neil was reported to weigh 159lbs, the Philadelphia Public Ledger stated that both Chip and Borrell were inside 158lbs.
