1914-01-26 Percy Jones w pts 20 Bill Ladbury, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the British and European 112lb titles, Ladbury was forced to take off six ounces when weighing in too heavy. In the fourth round Ladbury was badly hurt as was Jones in the sixth, but the latter kept his boxing going and eventually got to his rival when knocking him down with a right to the jaw in the 16th. Although Ladbury was hurt again in the 18th, the last two rounds saw Jones hanging on for grim life until the final bell after being smashed down for a count of ‘eight’ by a right to the jaw. Jones took over Ladbury’s world championship claim and won the Lonsdale Belt on his victory. On 2 February, Jimmy Wilde outscored Kid Nutter (90) over 15 rounds at the Drill Hall, Birkenhead and whilst there was no title billing, with both men inside the weight limit the Welshman’s 94lbs title claim was automatically at stake. Unfortunately, Nutter was killed in action in France (1916).
