1914-02-03 (142lbs) Johnny Kid Alberts nd-w pts 10 Frankie Madden, Atlantic Gardens, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. In a match made at 142lbs, Alberts’ title claim at the weight was on the line against Madden, the Bowery champion, the latter being totally ineffective for nine rounds, boring in without delivering punches and laying on the Elizabeth lad in such a manner that prevented him from doing his best work. There were no quibbles against the press decision in favour of Alberts as it was so obvious. In a return match against Tommy Maloney on 15 April at the Gardens, Marieville, Rhode Island, Alberts lost on points over 15 rounds. The Kennebec Journal stating that Alberts was outclassed and did not win a round as Maloney toyed with him all night. One must assume that this was contested above 142lbs as Alberts was still claiming the title at that weight when he went forward to meet Kid Graves.
