1914-02-14 (147lbs) Tom McCormick w co 1 (20) Johnny Summers, The Stadium, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Arthur Scott. Recorded in most record books as a 147lbs championship fight, it was, in effect, a semi-final leg of the Australian elimination series. However, regardless of that, McCormick (145¾) would be defending the title claim he won when beating Holberg. On deciding that it was in his best interests to finish early, Summers (143¼) tore into McCormick from the clang of the bell, showering the latter with punches from both hands at bewildering speed. It then became McCormick’s turn to hurl himself at Summers and the pair met in a frenzied burst of punching. Although McCormick was taking pile-driving blows to the body he somehow found a short right-arm blow to the jaw to lay Summers low and amidst a tremendous din the latter was counted out at 2.30, face down on the canvas.
