1914-03-14 (160lbs) Jeff Smith w pts 20 Eddie McGoorty, Baker’s Stadium, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Arthur Scott. While there was never much in it, with the crowd on the side of Smith (157¾) every time he landed on McGoorty (159) roars of approval went up. In the third round Smith’s right eye began to close, but after taking a fair bit of punishment in the fourth this was rectified prior to the start of the fifth by his corner’s clever work with the lancet. From that point on Smith got himself back in the fight, using a points scoring straight left, and in several sessions McGoorty was unable to lift himself. In the 17th McGoorty was badly hurt by a series of solid uppercuts, being still groggy in the 18th before coming back strongly in the final two sessions. Although the initial decision was given in McGoorty's favour it proved to be so unpopular that it was later rescinded by the officials in charge.
