1914-03-17 Freddie Welsh w pts 20 Mexican Joe Rivers, Vernon Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA - GB. Referee: Charles Eyton. Prior to the fight, the Los Angeles Times reported that Rivers (134) had the opportunity to take over Welshman’s world title claim at 135lbs if he could manage a win. Once the pair got going, Welsh (134) was content to outbox the Mexican, blocking and jabbing at will, while also outfighting him if he had to on occasion. Warned about the use of his elbows, Rivers was further disadvantaged by Welsh’s ability to keep him looking into the glare of the sun for much of the contest. There were no knockdowns and the referee had no hesitation in raising Welsh’s arm following the final bell.
