1914-03-21 (147lbs) Matt Wells w pts 20 Tom McCormick, The Stadium, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Harold Baker. The final leg of the Australian 147lbs international elimination tournament saw both Wells (146) and McCormick (146) boxing below par and although there was some heavy hitting involved, as a spectacle it was not the best. Wells showed up better at distance, especially with the left jab, while McCormick relied on the short right uppecut that had demolished Johnny Summers. After taking the opening five rounds, Wells endured some uncomfortable moments at close quarters before finding that a solid right to McCormick’s body was to his advantage. At the half-way mark, Wells was well ahead and despite tiring towards the finish nearly all of his punches were of the scoring variety, whereas McCormick continued to cuff when less volume and more quality would have been a better bet.
McCormick had just eight more bouts before rejoining the British army and being killed in action on the Western Front in June 1916.
