1914-04-03 (158lbs) Jimmy Clabby drew 20 Billy Murray, Mission Street Arena, Colma, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Jim Griffin. Clabby’s 158lbs title claim was on the line in this one and although Murray was a bit of an unknown quantity he had recently beaten Leo Houck and would command some respect. Even to start with, Clabby got on top from the third round and began to outbox Murray, especially with the left hand, and he was also effective with short right crosses. However, after several good rounds Clabby began to take it easy and was made to pay. In the 15th Murray came on strong, a hard left to the jaw nearly taking Clabby out of the fight, and at the bell the latter was on the ropes in a groggy condition. Murray was now pressing, but Clabby, beginning to clear his head, came back well prior to being caught with a crashing right cross in the 20th and having to hold on grimly until the final bell.
Following the drawn verdict, Murray announced that he would be adding his name to the list of those already claiming the 158lbs title.
