1914-04-07 (145lbs) Spike Kelly nd-w disq 1 (10) Wildcat Ferns, The Grand Opera House, Superior, Wisconsin, USA. On the day of the fight the Superior Telegram reported that the match had been articled at 145lbs, a weight that both men could make without difficulty. The contest itself was a fiasco, Kelly, hit below the belt by a wild left before the opening round was a minute old, being forced to leave the ring on a stretcher. Ferns later denied that the low blow had been intentional.

Although Kelly held on to his American title claim at the poundage, which was supported by the TS Andrews’ Annual published early in 1915, this would be his last fight at 145lbs. He would have just two more fights prior to being inactive for 18 months.
