1914-04-13 (160lbs) Jeff Smith w rsc 16 (20) Pat Bradley, Baker’s Stadium, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Harold Baker. In defence of his Australian world title claim, Smith (157½) recovered from a shock first-round knockdown to first outbox Bradley (157¼), with the left rarely out of the latter’s face, and then to outpunch him. Having jabbed and uppercut Bradley to distraction in the seventh Smith really went to town and a burst of heavy punches, especially left hooks, had his man over for two long counts. Although Bradley came back with some heavy blows of his own, by the 11th round he was almost finished and how he stayed upright for several more sessions was a mystery. However, in the 16th it was all over after terrific body shots had weakened Bradley and when he was dropped heavily by a right cross the police official in charge ordered the referee to stop the count and award the contest to Smith.
