1914-04-17 Willie Ritchie w pts 20 Harlem Tommy Murphy, Eighth Street Arena, San Francisco, California, USA - USA. Referee: Jim Griffin. Made at 135lbs, Ritchie (135) was quickly at work with the jab and although Murphy (134½) was the aggressor he failed to get through with many solid punches throughout as the champion kept him at distance and off balance. Punching with great accuracy, Ritchie hurt Murphy many times, but showing great courage and determination the latter stayed in the fight despite looking likely to go to the boards several times, most notably in the fourth, seventh and sixteenth rounds. Finally, in the last session, Ritchie managed what he had been trying for all night when he dropped Murphy with a right cross that shot the latter almost out of the ring. Hurt but not about to give up the brave Murphy got to his feet and despite being groggy made it to the final bell where the referee’s decision went against him.
