1914-04-17 Willie Ritchie w pts 20 Harlem Tommy Murphy, Eighth Street Arena, San Francisco, California, USA - USA. Referee: Jim Griffin. Made at 135lbs, Ritchie (135) was quickly at work with the jab, and although Murphy (134½) was the aggressor he failed to get through with many solid punches throughout as the champion kept him at distance and off balance. Punching with great accuracy, Ritchie hurt Murphy many times, but showing courage and determination the latter stayed in the fight despite looking likely to go to the boards several times, most notably in the fourth, seventh and 16th rounds. Finally, in the last session, Ritchie managed what he had been trying for all night when he dropped Murphy with a right cross that shot the latter almost out of the ring. Hurt, but not about to give up, despite being extremely groggy the brave Murphy got to his feet to make it to the final bell.
