1914-04-20 (160lbs) Joe Borrell nc 4 (20) Bandsman Blake, The Ring, Southwark, London, England. Referee: J. T. Hulls. Billed as a title bout at 160lbs with both men announced as having made the weight, it was described in the Mirror of Life as being 12 minutes of wrestling with an alleged foul blow struck after the fourth round that was followed by pandemonium. At the bell to end the fourth, Blake dropped his hands to go to his corner and was promptly dropped by a cracking left hook to the jaw. With Blake in no position to box on in the fifth and the crowd screaming for a foul, the referee called the bout off, claiming it to be a ‘No Contest’. He later said that he had not heard the bell.
