1914-05-01 Sam Langford nd-l pts 10 Harry Wills, National Baseball Park, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: Buddy Griffin. Although only a short distance fight, and a no-decision one at that, Wills claimed the ‘black’ title after being awarded the press decision over Langford. Wills had the better of the opening four rounds, closing Langford’s left eye, but the latter was never fully subdued and was fighting strongly at the final bell. While Wills used his long reach to good advantage, Langford was far happier at close quarters where he could stay out of trouble and work the body. There were no knockdowns.
