1914-05-01 Harry Wills w pts10 Sam Langford, National Baseball Park, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: Buddy Griffin. Although only a short distance fight, Wills successfully claimed the ‘black’ title after being awarded the decision over Langford. Wills had the better of the opening four rounds, closing Langford’s left eye, but the title claimant was never fully subdued and was fighting strongly at the final bell. There were no knockdowns.
