1914-05-26 (147lbs) Mike Gibbons nd-w pts 10 Johnny Kid Alberts, The Alhambra, Syracuse, New York, USA. Referee: Charles Huck. In a match made at 147lbs, thus involving Gibbons’ claim at the weight, the latter was never in any danger of losing as he controlled matters throughout. Alberts (145), whose title claim at 142lbs was not on the line, landed no more than six clean punches all night according to press reports, while Gibbons (147) was content to show his marvellous boxing ability without hurting his rival until opening up in the last two rounds. Having no answer to the left jab, Alberts spent much of the time rushing at Gibbons, only to be forced to cover up.

Having great difficulty making 147lbs, Gibbons should be recognised as a middleweight from there on in.
