1914-06-06 (160lbs) Jeff Smith w pts 20 Jimmy Clabby, Baker’s Stadium, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Harold Baker. In defending the Australian version of the championship Smith (156¼) met a very good man in Clabby (153¼), who not only possessed the longer reach of the pair but had punching power to match. Although there were no knockdowns, both landed lusty blows and both showed great cleverness. Those sitting further back from ringside probably thought it boring, but it was nothing of the kind as the men set about negating each other’s strengths. Knowing that he had no chance of winning if he allowed his fellow-American to stand off him, Smith realised that he had to keep the fight at close quarters. And that is ultimately what he did, Clabby not being able to do much damage after the 15th round.
