1914-09-15 Sam Langford drew 12 Battling Jim Johnson, Atlas AA, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: George Tuohy. With Langford's ‘black’ title claim up for grabs, Johnson showed much improvement from their fight a month earlier and made it difficult for his rival to take control, regardless of the fact that much of the action was at close quarters. While Johnson made the kidneys his target, Langford often used his head, an act that angered the recipient considerably. It was a close-run thing with neither man gaining a clear lead, and at the final bell the decision appeared to suit all in attendance.
