1914-11-06 (158lbs) Jimmy Clabby w pts 20 George Chip, Daly City Arena, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Benny Selig. Described in the San Francisco Chronicle as another step towards the settlement of' the 158lbs title with both men inside the weight, Clabby said afterwards that he saw himself not only as the American champion but world leader also. Taken in context, Chip had lost his claim to Al McCoy in April but was back into contention after twice beating Billy Murray, while Clabby had recently been turned back by Jeff Smith for the Australian 160lbs version of the title. Unable to fathom out his elusive and tantalising foe, Chip was left chasing shadows and in the ninth round he was floored by a left to the jaw as he was stumbling backwards. Following the fight it was reckoned that Clabby took 17 of the rounds with three even, and Chip was on the run after a bad 16th when he was hurt by hard rights to the head and follow-up body punches. It was just as bad for Chip in the final session and was a disappointing end to the last professional fight permitted in California under the new regulations enforced by the winners of the State election.
