1914-11-26 Sam Langford w co 14 (20) Harry Wills, Vernon Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: George Blake. Billed for the ‘black’ title, despite twisting an ankle in the opening round Langford stayed with his bigger rival to eventually outlast him. Both men were knocked down repeatedly, Langford taking advantage of four counts early on and doing well to stave off Wills’ straight-arm smashes throughout. From the 12th onwards Langford showed up well and in the 14th, following a torrent of blows that made Wills groggy he finished the latter off with a left swing to the jaw halfway though the session.
Langford, who would never be able to challenge for the world title due to the damage wreaked by Jack Johnson, joined a long list of great coloured fighters who were beaten by the ‘Colour Bar’.
