1914-11-28 (160lbs) Mick King w pts 20 Jeff Smith, Baker’s Stadium, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Harold Baker. When Smith (157), defending the Australian version of the title, dropped King (157¼) with a terrific left hook in the opening session the fight appeared to be one that would not last very long. If that was what Smith thought then he was wrong as King, with clever defensive boxing and the use of sharp lefts and rights, came right back to get himself in front. At the halfway mark, Smith, realising that he was fighting the wrong tactical battle, reverted to the jab and apart from the 12th and 13th had the remainder of the contest very much his own way, especially in the last four rounds when he came close to knocking King over. While the decision in favour of King was greeted with much applause those who knew the game well enough realised that the verdict was flawed and called for an immediate rematch.
