1915-01-21 (158lbs) Jimmy Clabby nd-l pts 10 Mike Gibbons, The Auditorium, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Referee: Harry Stout. The contest was billed for the 158lbs championship. While the Milwaukee Sentinel referred to Clabby (153¾) as the champion prior to the contest, it was Gibbons (153½) who was also claiming the title afterwards, having outboxed his rival all the way. In one of the greatest exhibitions of pure boxing seen in the region up to that point in time, Gibbons fully lived up to his nickname of the ‘Phantom’ when it came to cleverness. On top of that he showed he was also stronger than his clever opponent and hit harder as well. Despite being cut over the right eye following a clash of heads in the ninth round, Gibbons was unmarked, while only great defence by Clabby saved him from a knockdown. Fast and furious from the opening bell, the fight proved that clever boxing could be just as exciting as a slugfest.
