1915-02-12 (116lbs) Frankie Burns w pts 20 Artie Simons, Louisiana Auditorium, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: Tommy Burns. Made at 116lbs, as a title contest it was not taken too seriously by the rest of America, but Burns was given a big surprise by the little-known Simons despite winning by a big margin. Dishing out terrific punishment to head and body it looked to be just a matter of time before Burns would knock his man out, but Simons stayed on his feet throughout, even coming back hard during three of the last five sessions.

It is doubtful as to whether many boxing people outside New Orleans ever recognised Burns as a champion, but the publicity engendered certainly helped him to get Kid Williams into the ring by the end of the year.
