1915-04-09 Freddie Welsh nd-w pts 10 Billy Wagner, The Coliseum, Toledo, Ohio, USA - WORLD. Referee: Matt Hinkel. Articled at the championship weight and adhered to, Welsh (134½) was deemed by the majority of the press to have taken the ten-round decision over Wagner (133). Hitting back at every opportunity with his favoured uppercut, the Chicago Tribune reporter reckoned Wagner won five rounds to the champion’s two, with three even, although Welsh made the fight throughout.
In his next contest, Welsh took on Red Watson (nd-w pts 10 on 20 April at The Arena, Hudson, Wisconsin), and although the latter was thought to have made 135lbs there was no proof that the champion had.
Another no-decision bout, on 24 May at Schomer Park, Montreal, Canada, saw Welsh (138) fight a press draw over ten rounds against Frankie Fleming (124) in what was advertised as involving the world title after Welsh had been articled to make 133lbs at the 3pm weigh-in.
This was followed by another contest involving Johnny Lustig (nd-w pts 10 on 18 June at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn, NYC, New York), in which Welsh came in at 136½lbs ringside to the challenger’s 137. What is unclear is whether the fighters made the articled 135lbs at the 3pm weigh-in.
