1915-04-12 (145lbs) Willie Moore nd-w rsc 5 (6) Young Jack O’Brien, Olympia AA, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Although just a mere six rounder, Moore (142½) claimed the American 145lbs title after he had defeated O’Brien (145), having smashed his man down with a big left hook for ‘nine’ in the fifth before the fight was stopped. Christened Wilhelm von Franzke, Moore was a member of one of the most outstanding boxing families to come out of America, his brothers being Pal (Thomas), Frankie, Reddy and Albert, all top-line fighters.
There was no doubting Moore’s power, but continually participating in six-round contests hardly enhanced his claim, and when Ted Kid Lewis (139¾) was deemed by the press to have outscored him over six rounds at the Olympia AA on 18 October it was further weakened.
