1915-05-31 (158lbs) Al McCoy nd-drew 10 Silent Martin, Ebbets Field, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Initially due to meet Johnny Howard, when he pulled out McCoy (157½) put his championship claim at risk against Martin (155), a man known for his aggressive, uncompromising way of fighting. According to the New York Times he certainly had McCoy hot and bothered at times despite only being given a draw by the pressmen in attendance. Like McCoy, Martin was capable of soaking up punishment, as well as showing a clever defence. Several times he had McCoy wincing from solid blows and scrambling for cover, but to take over the latter’s title claim he would have needed to find the punch to put his man away with, something that well over a 100 fighters had failed to do up to that point.
