1915-05-31 (158lbs) Mike Gibbons nd-drew 10 Soldier Bartfield, Ebbets Field, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Gibbons (155) defended his 158lbs title claim against Bartfield (148) in this one, and although exhibiting his usual cleverness he was never able to fathom the latter’s defensive tactics before the contest developed into a game of chess. With Gibbons not appearing to exert himself, something Bartfield took advantage of, it was only in the last few sessions when the man from St Paul cut loose, staggering the soldier with heavy blows, did he do enough to deserve the press draw.
There was much talk about an elimination series being held in New York following this contest, but although Bartfield claimed the title, billing himself as the man who beat Gibbons, he was more of a welterweight than a 158lbs man. Continuing to fight in no-decision contests, when Bartfield (148) was stopped inside eight rounds by the 152lbs Italian Joe Gans at the Clermont Rink, Brooklyn, NYC on 25 December he lost any support he may have had.
