The New York Telegram reported that Stone was never at risk of losing his 142lbs title claim in this one, even though Fitzsimmons was a shade in front after five rounds. Picking up the pace at that stage of the fight, Stone inflicted a cut over Fitzsimmons’ left eye in the seventh and had the latter on the back foot right through to the final bell.
