1915-12-04 (116lbs) Johnny Ertle nd-w rtd 3 (10) Young O’Leary, Clermont Rink, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. With both men inside 116lbs Ertle’s title claim at the weight was on the line, and although it was a tough battle while it lasted O’Leary (116) gradually succumbed. Having sustained a broken nose in the third round it was clear that O’Leary could not fight on and he was retired on his stool during the interval, leaving Ertle (114¾) the winner.

Ertle next met two men in six-round no-decision contests at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, knocking out Young Fred Diggins in the first round on 6 December and receiving the press decision over Joe O’Donnell on 25 December. Both contests were made at 116lbs.
