1916-01-18 (158lbs) Mike Gibbons nd-w co 1 (10) Young Ahearn, The Auditorium, St Paul, Minnesota, USA. Referee: Jack McGuigan. Billed to decide the championships of England and America over ten rounds, following his victory Gibbons (155½) had more support in the States than Al McCoy, of that there was no doubt. The contest was almost over before it started. Following a whirlwind exchange of blows from range both men swung and missed before clinching. That was followed by more clinching. Then, after about 90 seconds of the opening round had elapsed Gibbons worked Ahearn (154¾) over to a corner before sending him down to be counted out on connecting with a smashing right to the jaw.
