1916-02-09 (116lbs) Johnny Ertle nd-w pts 10 Terry Martin, Clermont Rink, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, USA. Made at 116lbs, Ertle (115) outfought and outboxed Martin (115¼) in nine of the ten rounds, battering his rival with rights under the heart and left hooks to the jaw and giving him no respite. Ertle also excelled on the inside, but could not put Martin away.

A few days later, on 14 February, Ertle risked his title claim when meeting Joe Tuber (nd-w pts 6 at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) in a short-distance contest.
