1916-02-22 (116lbs) Johnny Ertle drew 12 Al Shubert, Bristol Arena, New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. With both men inside the prescribed 116lbs according to the Boston Post, it was contested at a fast pace with Shubert making the early running without being able to gain an advantage. As the bout moved along, Ertle picked it up and was the stronger at the finish.

On 12 March at the Broadway SC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, Ertle (117½) won a ten-round press decision over the Young Zulu Kid (110), thus risking his 116lbs title claim and a few days later, on 20 March, he was given the six-round press decision over Young McGovern at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both men were thought to be inside 116lbs.
