1916-02-22 (116lbs) Johnny Ertle drew 12 Al Shubert, Bristol Arena, New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. With both men inside the prescribed 116lbs according to the Boston Post, it was contested at a fast pace with Shubert making the early running without being able to gain an advantage. As the bout moved along Ertle picked it up, being the stronger at the finish.

On 12 March, at the Broadway SC, Brooklyn, NYC, New York, Ertle (117½) won a ten-round press decision over the Young Zulu Kid (110), thus risking his 116lbs title claim, and a few days later, on 20 March, he was given the six-round press decision over Young McGovern at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both of Ertle's opponents were thought to be inside 116lbs.
