1916-06-17 (116lbs) Johnny Ertle nd-w pts 12 Johnny Ritchie, Keokuk AC, Federal League Park, St Louis, Missouri, USA. Referee: Harry Sharpe. Made at 116lbs, Ertle maintained his grip at the weight when holding Ritchie off, and he had to be at his best to do so as the latter most certainly came to win, attacking throughout. Ritchie, who never stopped working despite being battered at times by uppercuts, hooks, body shots and straight punches, was always right in front of Ertle. While the 116lbs title claimant received the press verdict from those at ringside it was a tough night for him. There were no knockdowns, just plenty of hard hitting.

On 4 September, at the Olympia AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ertle (116) lost the six-round press decision to Benny Kaufman (114½), a result that changed nothing.
