1916-07-25 (145lbs) Jack Britton drew 12 Johnny Griffiths, Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Reported by the Lowell Sun as a contest where the championship could be won or lost by decision, it has to be assumed that both men were inside 145lbs. A fast and clever fight, neither man was ever in danger despite both scoring with hard blows on occasion, and the result was a fair one. With Britton jabbing and hooking well while Griffiths showed a smart defence, it was only towards the end that the pair went toe-to-toe.

Another fight for Britton (147) in which he risked his title came against the 134½lbs Joe Welling at the Queensberry AC, Buffalo, New York on 5 September. A ten-round no-decision affair, Britton was ultimately awarded the press verdict.
