1916-10-17 (145lbs) Jack Britton w pts 12 Ted Kid Lewis, Armory AA, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The Boston Post classed this one as a title fight but failed to list any weights, while according to Lewis, with both men inside the limit Britton’s title was at stake. Britton nearly lost in the fifth when going low and using his forearm, but escaped with a warning and while Lewis forced the contest from the start and set a furious pace the former’s cleverness took him to the front. Winning the last few sessions handily, Britton just about got home.

Britton and Lewis met again at the Armory AA on 14 November, drawing over 12 rounds. While there was no mention in the Boston Post that the title was up for grabs, the Boston Herald reported that Lewis made the required 142lbs even if Britton did not.
