1917-01-01 (145lbs) Jack Britton nd-w pts 10 Lockport Jimmy Duffy, Broadway Auditorium, Buffalo, New York, USA. According to the Buffalo Morning Express, Duffy’s attack on the 145lbs championship was ably warded off as Britton (144½) outgeneralled his rival all the way and dropped him in the seventh and ninth with solid blows. Earlier, there had been a bit of a wrangle when Duffy (144½) was allowed to use a mouth protector, but it failed to save him from a beating. An almost certainly over the weight Britton risked his title at the Coliseum, Columbus, Ohio on 5 March when allowing Bryan Downey to make 144lbs, but he was still on his feet at the end of the 12th round prior to losing the press decision.
