1917-04-17 Freddie Welsh nd-w pts 12 Battling Nelson, Future AC, St Louis, Missouri, USA - WORLD. Referee: Ed Smith. The Chicago Tribune reported that Welsh (135) retained his title with a clear-cut win over the former champion, Nelson (132), who despite being on the receiving end of the champion’s punches never stopped coming forward. Gliding away from punches and not being hit solidly more than half a dozen times, Welsh also showed punishing power with the left jab and was the master when it came to infighting.

Taking part in no-decision contests as a means of keeping ring rust away, further risk fights where Welsh scaled above 135lbs but allowed his opponents to make the weight came against Rocky Kansas (nd-l pts 10 on 20 April at the Queensberry AC, Buffalo, New York) and Chick Simler (nd-l pts 10 on 24 April at Eddie Burke’s Club, Scranton, Pennsylvania), Kansas scaling 131lbs and Simler 134.
