1917-04-30 (158lbs) Al McCoy nd-l pts 10 Harry Greb, Exposition Hall, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Referee: Johnny McAvoy. Both men weighed below the 158lbs middleweight limit according to the Pittsburgh Post. Getting away fast with the exception of the opening round, Greb did all the forcing in what was the first ten-rounder held in Pittsburgh under the new law. Fighting in determined fashion and pounding in blows from both hands Greb hit McCoy enough times to have sunk a battleship, but the latter remained on his feet against all the odds. Other than a swinging left, McCoy offered nothing of any value, only surviving by either grabbing Greb or backing off at every opportunity
On 4 July, McCoy met Jackie Clark (nd-l pts 10 at the Goodwill Firemens’ Armory, Lonaconing, Maryland). While the Baltimore American reported the contest as one that would decide the American middleweight championship there was nothing mentioned about weights. This one should be treated with suspicion as a title fight until better details emerge.
