1917-07-04 (158lbs) Mike Gibbons nd-w pts 12 George Chip, Wright Field, Youngstown, Ohio, USA. Referee: M. J. McHale. According to the Chicago Tribune, Gibbons successfully defended his 158lbs title claim in this one, his wonderful skill enabling him to hit Chip repeatedly while ducking and side-stepping the latter’s lunges with ease. Most rounds were the same, with Chip left to chase shadows, but in the seventh the latter got closer than he had previously managed, only for Gibbons to cover up until the cyclone expended itself. Despite jabbing Chip silly at times, Gibbons lacked the power to finish early and had to go the whole 12 rounds.
