1917-10-12 (158lbs) Mike Gibbons nd-w rsc 3 (10) Frank Mantell, The Auditorium, St Paul, Minnesota, USA. Referee: Mr McMahon. Proving far too good for Mantell, his speed and hitting power bewildering, Gibbons won all the way before the referee stepped in and brought matters to a conclusion in the third round. Defending his 158lbs title claim, Gibbons never gave Mantell a look in as he danced in with stiff rights or scoring lefts, and although no knockdowns were reported it was a popular decision.

For over a year Gibbons was inactive, having decided to concentrate on his post of boxing instructor at Camp Dodge, Iowa.
