1918-04-10 (116lbs) Memphis Pal Moore w pts 15 Johnny Ertle, Lyric Theatre, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Referee: Jim O’Donovan. Although Pete Herman was by now the internationally recognised 118lbs champion, this contest was considered to be a battle for the 116lbs championship of the world. The fight itself saw Moore (113) outscoring the harder-hitting Ertle (116¾), often landing with the open glove, and at the final bell the winner would be able to style himself as the new 116lbs champion.
Moore’s main aim was to get Herman in the ring to decide the 118lbs title, never seeing his title claim at 116lbs as anything more than a stepping-stone. To that end, and with Herman in mind, he twice took on Earl Puryear, the German-born Eddie Wimler and Jackie Sharkey at 118lbs. Moore won all four contests, beating Puryear (w pts 8 at the Phoenix AC, Memphis, Tennessee on 29 April and on 20 May); Wimler (w pts 12 at the Lyric Theatre, Baltimore on 6 May) and Sharkey (nd-w pts 8 at the Armory AA Arena, Jersey City, New Jersey on 5 August).
