In a no-decision bout, Lewis was knocked down nine times before being counted out and Britton successfully claimed the title on the result. Prior to the fight, Lewis, suffering from anaemia, had been told by doctors to take a complete rest from boxing but his management team stupidly disregarded the advice. Also, with the championship weight in America fluctuating between 142 and 145lbs regardless of whether a 3pm or ringside weigh-in, Lewis (inside 145lbs) should have realised that Britton (144½) would be accepted as champion if he won  inside the distance.
