1919-05-19 (142lbs) [[Jack Britton]] nd-w pts 10 [[Joe Welling]], The Arena, Syracuse, New York, USA. Referee: Harry Stout. Both men were inside 142lbs at the 6pm weigh-in according to the Chicago Tribune report, which went on to say that the championship was on the line. Although Welling just about had the better of the opening four rounds when landing the cleaner punches and making the fight, Britton was merely biding his time and from thereon he continually stabbed out the left to keep his rival off balance. In the sixth a solid right almost closed Welling’s left eye and despite the latter looking for a stoppage in the last three sessions Britton was far too cute and elusive to be caught napping.
