1920-01-14 (158lbs) Mike O'Dowd nd-w pts 10 Frank Carbone, Roller Palace Rink, Detroit, Michigan, USA. The Detroit Free Press reported this to be a 158lbs title fight and with O’Dowd failing to stop Carbone in their previous five fights it was unlikely that this one would end early. Having rushed the champion in the opening session and forcing him to give ground repeatedly when landing several solid blows to head and body, Carbone must have thought that this was his time. However, O’Dowd took up the offensive in the second right through to the final bell, but was unable to dislodge Carbone despite hitting him flush on the jaw at least a dozen times during the bout. Although O’Dowd was an easy winner in the eyes of the press, he found the awkward style of Carbone difficult to contend with at times, especially when having to deal with an extended left lead and back-handed blows to the head.
