The ''St Paul Pioneer'' reported that with O’Dowd (157½) inside the stipulated 158lbs, Ratner (155½) threw many punches in the hope one might just give him the championship. Starting strongly, O’Dowd shaded the opening rounds when taking the fight to Ratner and although the latter fought back in the seventh through to the ninth, when banging in heavy rights, the champion stayed ahead by dint of clever boxing.
