1921-01-14 Benny Leonard w rsc 6 (15) Richie Mitchell, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Johnny Haukaup. Making a fast start, Leonard (134) had Mitchell (134) down and in a bad way three times in the opening round, a left hook and two rights to the jaw being the final blows, before the latter caught the champion coming in for the kill to drop him with a right to the head, blood leaking from his left eye. Having recovered, Leonard took his time against a dangerous foe until he had further weakened him and in the sixth he had the dangerous Mitchell down three more times, the referee rescuing the game challenger at 1.55 of the session when he was ready to fall again. On 24 February, Leonard met Joe Welling over eight rounds at The Coliseum, St Louis, Missouri in a fight that was reported to have been made at 135lbs, 2pm weigh-in. However, following a points win for Leonard it was reported that even if Welling had scored a stoppage win he could not have claimed the title due to a contractual arrangement.
