1921-11-10 Johnny Buff w pts 15 Jackie Sharkey, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WORLD. Referee: Patsy Haley. Only seven weeks after winning the title, Buff (114½) proved that he wanted to be seen as a fighting champion when risking his crown against a logical and dangerous opponent such as Sharkey (116½). In winning at least 11 of the 15 rounds to land the unanimous decision, Buff set a steady pace, never relented in his assaults, and generally outworked the weight-weakened Sharkey, whose only answer was to punch back wildly. Sharkey, who was knocked over in the second from a left swing to the jaw, was always competitive but lacked the speed to put his rival on the back foot.
