1922-05-15 Bryan Downey w pts 12 Mike O'Dowd, Fairmount Arena, Columbus, Ohio, USA - OHIO. Referee: Sammy Trott. Billed for the title, with both men inside 160lbs, Downey (156½) eliminated one of the leading contenders on the result, a solid left hook almost spelling curtains for O’Dowd (156) in the fifth round. There was no doubting that the veteran was considerably shaken up but he managed to get to his feet and deny Downey, the aggressor throughout, a kayo for the remainder of the bout, his wily skills just about keeping him out of harm's way. According to the Chicago Tribune it was a 15-round bout that was decided by the judges unanimously, while the Ring Record Book and various other papers recorded it as a 12 rounder that was decided by the referee.

On 13 June, Downey, weighing 153lbs, lost a press decision to Jock Malone, also inside the middleweight limit at the New Arena, Aurora, Illinois, and a rematch was set up to decide the Ohio version of the title.
